What We Heard, What We’re Doing (A2A Community Findings)

First of All, Thank You!

In depth one on one conversations—from lifelong locals to new neighbors, business owners, teachers, and students—helped us see our town with clearer eyes and a bigger heart. The message was hopeful and practical: when we take care of housing and neighborhoods, everything else becomes easier (workforce, youth retention, business vitality, and community pride).

Big Themes We Heard

1) Housing is the first domino

  • Availability & affordability: Not enough safe, starter, and workforce homes; many older houses need significant repair; rentals that allow pets are scarce.
  • Wages vs. prices: Home prices and rents outpaced local incomes after 2020, pushing families to the edge.
  • Neighborhood fit: Some lot sizes and aging infrastructure make infill harder than it should be.
Why it matters: Teachers, medical staff, trades, and young families can’t put down roots without a clear path to housing.

2) Infrastructure shapes confidence

  • Streets, curbs, sidewalks: Gaps reduce curb appeal and make new builds less attractive.
  • Utilities & internet: Strong fiber helps, but basic maintenance (water, drainage, paving) still needs attention in spots.
  • Amenities: People want simple, shared spaces (courts, trails, indoor pool) that bring us together.
Why it matters: Visible improvements signal that “good things happen here,” which invites residents, businesses, and visitors to invest their time and dollars locally.

3) Youth want a reason to stay—or come back

  • Pathways: Students don’t always see clear local routes into trades, healthcare, childcare, small business, remote work, or public service.
  • Belonging: Many young people want peers, activities, and housing they can afford early in their careers.
Why it matters: When youth can picture their adult life here, they help carry the town forward.

4) Community culture is ready for a lift

  • Fatigue is real: Many of us have been “making do” for a long time; it’s easy to feel stuck or divided.
  • Pride is still here: Safety, schools, outdoor beauty, and kindness are why people choose this place.
Why it matters: Small, visible wins rebuild trust and momentum faster than any slogan.

5) Business support needs a clearer “front door”

  • Information gap: Owners don’t always know what help exists or how to use it.
  • Mentorship & skills: Start-ups and long-time businesses alike asked for practical training and a local mentor network.
  • Downtown traffic & costs: To thrive, businesses need customers, workers, and predictable costs.
Why it matters: A resilient local economy keeps essentials nearby and opportunity within reach.

Our First Step: Bright Block Initiative

Clean Lots. Strong Homes. Proud Neighborhoods.

Based on the A2A listening, we’re starting where the community asked us to start—housing and neighborhood pride—with practical, right-sized projects:

  1. Clean & Clear: Partner-led removal of unsafe/abandoned structures and preparation of lots for future homes.
  2. Repair & Return: Coordinated rehab of existing homes to bring them back into safe, affordable use.
  3. Starter & Workforce Homes: Modest, high-quality homes (and small multi-units where appropriate) that local workers can actually afford.
  4. Blocks of Pride: Trees, sidewalks, pocket parks, and frontage fixes that make streets feel welcoming and well-loved.

How it helps the other issues:

  • More attainable homes → stronger workforce & youth retention
  • Better blocks → confidence for business growth & infrastructure investments
  • Visible progress → shared pride & momentum across town

How We’ll Work (Values & Approach)

  • Local first: Led by neighbors, guided by town and county plans, aligned with schools and employers.
  • Partner-powered: We’ll collaborate with the Town, County, WCDA, Habitat, WBC, SBDC/NW College, lenders, realtors, and contractors.
  • Right-sized & transparent: One block at a time. Clear updates, community input, open books.
  • Respect for place: Improvements that protect small-town character while making room for families and essential workers.

How You Can Join In

  • Suggest a site or need: Vacant lots, fixers, or small clusters that could become bright blocks.
  • Lend a hand or a skill: Contractors, subs, materials, volunteers—add your name to our roster.
  • Share your story: Why did you choose the Basin? What would help you stay? Your input shapes our next steps.

Bright Block Initiative - Empowering Communities

Hope, with a plan.

The A2A process didn’t just surface problems; it revealed a shared desire to act with care, fairness, and common sense. If we focus on a few bright blocks—and keep listening—we’ll change the story together.

  • Publish a simple Neighborhood Project List (cleanups, rehabs, small builds).
  • Launch our first Bright Block with partners—one visible win, then another.
  • Set up a Business Resource “Front Door” Webpage with what help and programs are available locally, state wide and federally so owners can quickly find help and resources.
